These pictures were taken at the time of the death of Thomas Levi Snyder (Jan, 1931)  The man walking could be any of the Snyder brothers - Vernice, Frank, or Earl.  The two young women are Lucy and Mary.  Note the matching dresses adorned with Kewpie dolls!

The Bailey County Cemetery was established in 1918 with donated land.  My family has approximately 27 family members buried here, beginning in 1918 with the death of my great-uncle Carl Snyder during the influenza epidemic of 1918.  [Thanks to Bonnie (Wood) Jackson for this information!]  At one time, my family, including the Chitwoods, Snyders, and Trapps, was the largest family group to have been buried there.  I do not know if this is currently true.

There has never been much distinction between the Chitwoods and the Snyders that I can remember.  Sisters Allie and Dallie Chitwood married brothers Frank and Vernice Snyder, creating a family tree whose branches  intertwined to form one family unit.  The family of Mary (Snyder) Wood was considered to be just another part of the Chitwood family, just as the Chitwoods were part of the Snyder family.  There were never separate reunions - never was a reason to do so!  We were all just cousins - Chitwoods, Snyders, Woods!

This cemetery holds as much of my heart as is possible for a dusty, dry  piece of dirt in West Texas!  I can stand amid my heritage, remembering each one, remembering perhaps at some level the ones who were gone before I was born.  This is where we go to visit our dead, remember their lives, and acknowledge the eternal spirit that will always live within us.
